| New phone system balances needs
of two thriving businesses
Challenge
When Tiki Recording Studios and Guarino Graphics set out to purchase
a new phone system, their needs stretched beyond just equipment.
These husband and wife entrepreneurs operate two thriving, independent
businesses in one three-story, modernized Victorian-style house
on Long Island’s Gold Coast.
Part of NacTel’s challenge involved designing a phone system
to serve each business separately, and together, when needed. The
task also required innovative engineering to accommodate the needs
of a sophisticated recording studio.
Solution
NacTel installed a 24-station digital NEC phone system and added
a host of customized conveniences to satisfy this multi-faceted
environment.
Tiki’s owner, Fred Guarino, said, "The driving force
for the new phone system was the front door. When a visitor rang,
someone from one of the three floors had to go and open the door.
Now, it’s part of the phone system. When someone rings the
bell, the phones chime – and light up in the studio when a
recording session is in progress. We use the intercom to greet and
open the door for guests. Plus, a special solution that uses lights
alerts staff when someone has entered.
Benefits
Fred and Jan praised the staff at NacTel for their "patient,
detail-oriented approach. They were very careful and sensitive to
the integrity of the studio’s sound-proof construction, and
completed the job with the smoothest transition."
Because both businesses operate in such different environments,
and each is busy during different times and in different ways, NacTel
engineered the phone system to meet each one’s special needs.
First, extraneous sounds can be catastrophic when recording, so
Tiki’s three control rooms have a "do not disturb"
feature with flashing strobe lights signaling a ringing phone.
Another custom feature involved configuring the recording consoles
to permit outside callers and in-studio recording artists to communicate.
Fred said, "this innovative technology recently let a director
in Hollywood participate as if he was right in our recording room."
Upstairs at the busy graphic design studio of Guarino Graphics,
the new voice mail system has been instrumental in providing quality
service to clients. Plus, one of the best features for Jan Guarino
is the ability to transfer calls between the graphics and recording
studios. "Before," she said, "I’d have to run
to another part of the building to talk with a Tiki customer about
artwork. Now I just push a button. Having the right technology is
so wonderful!"
